THT

Helmut Newton

I fell in love with almost every photo taken by Helmut Newton.  I find them somewhat strange but extremely cool at the same time.  I noticed that many of early photos had been of nude woman, due to his apprenticeship with the portrait, nude and fashion photographer yva.  However, those were not the ones I had too much interest in.  If I am correct, not only from a little research, but just from looking at most of his photos, they all seem very high fashion.  They are all awesome photos, however I notice at least one strange item thrown in to almost every photo.  Some people might find it weird, but I feel as though they make them more interesting to look at.
His photos seem to all take place form the early to mid 90’s.  I also notice that almost every early photo is of a women.  As the years go on you start seeing a few men getting involved in the photos, but not in many.  Almost all of the photos taken are also portraits, that include people and not objects.  The down side is that all of his photos are taken in black and white.  Although they mostly all express some type of high fashion, there is no color used to show the detail for the products.
The great thing about the black and white is that he experiments to a great extent with shadows.  Along with shadows, his photos are taken at all different angels.  It give you a perspective of a person/object from a side you rarely see them at.  All of his photos seem to be very clear and readable.  If there is not a nude woman in a photo, then the person or body part, seems to come off as an awkward seductiveness.  Even the 9th photo down is just a simple shoe, however I get the sense of an envious, beautiful woman wearing it .
He seems to put a lot of detail on the persons skin and if their legs are in the photo, there is a lot of emphasis on that as well.  As I stated before, in almost every photo, there is a strange object that is place.  I believe Newton does that to grab the attention of the viewers.  There is an all around dramatic feel to almost every photo taken by Newton.  The clothes, woman, makeup, and strange items give a flashy, but elegant scene.  All in all, Helmut Newton photos are magnificent and really stand out to me, even if they are in black and white.
